Percorten-V Injection for Dogs 4ml

Percorten-V (desoxycorticosterone pivalate) is used as replacement therapy for the mineralocorticoid deficit in dogs with primary adrenocortical insufficiency (Addison's Disease). Canine Addison's Disease (hypoadrenocorticism) is a condition in which a dog's adrenal glands aren't working properly. Adrenal glands produce chemicals and hormones that help regulate many bodily functions such as metabolism, blood pressure and stress response. Percorten-V contains 25mg/ml desoxycorticosterone pivalate, which is recognized as having the same qualitative effects as the natural hormone aldosterone. The beginning dose may be recommended at 1 mg per pound of body weight every 25 days. Percorten-V increases the rate of sodium absorption and enhances potassium excretion. Percorten-V also increases extracellular fluid volume, which expands blood volume and improves the venous return to the heart and cardiac output. This effect prevents the life-threatening hypotensive shock and prerenal azotemia observed in animals suffering from hypoadrenocorticism. Desoxycorticosterone pivalate

What is Percorten-V used for?

Used as replacement therapy for the mineralocorticoid deficit in dogs with primary adrenocortical insufficiency (Canine Addison's Disease). Canine Addison's Disease (hypoadrenocorticism) is a condition in which a dog's adrenal glands aren't working properly.

Benefits:

Improved quality of life in dogs with Addison's Disease Helps normalize electrolyte levels

How it works: Canine Addison's Disease (hypoadrenocorticism) is a condition in which a dog's adrenal glands aren't working properly. Adrenal glands produce chemicals and hormones that help regulate many bodily functions such as metabolism, blood pressure and stress response. Percorten-V is used as replacement therapy for the mineralocorticoid deficit in dogs with primary adrenocortical insufficiency (Canine Addison's Disease).

What you should know: Percorten-V will not cure Addison's disease, but it will help decrease some symptoms associated with the disease. In treating canine hypoadrenocorticism, it is also necessary to replace glucocorticoids with small daily doses of glucocorticoid hormones (e.g. prednisone or prednisolone). Failure to administer glucocorticoids is the most common reason for treatment failure. Therapy with Percorten-V and glucorticoids will be necessary for the animal's lifetime.

How to give this medication: Percorten-V is administered by IM (intramuscular) injection. The beginning dose may be recommended at 1 mg per pound of body weight every 25 days. Give this medication exactly as directed by your veterinarian. If you do not understand the directions, ask the veterinarian or pharmacist to explain them to you.

If you miss a dose: If you miss a dose, contact your veterinarian.

Percorten-V should not be used in: Do not use in pregnant dogs or in dogs suffering from congestive heart disease, severe renal disease or edema.

Possible side effects: Some patients are more sensitive to the actions of Percorten-V and may exhibit side effects in an exaggerated degree. Signs of over dosage may include increased drinking and urination, fluid retention and weight gain. Other side effects may include depression, diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, weight loss, incontinence, pain on injection and injection site abscess. If you observe any of these side effects, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. .
